My wife and I will shorlty move to Korea. I will be working in the Geoje shipyard area and have been told we can have an apartment in Geoje or Okpo. We will be there about 2 years and my wife will not be working. We would appreciate some pro's and cons for living in each area to help us choose the best location. Thanks for your help.

Cheers Darren

HI Darren,

Few questions to help give you a better idea?
Have Kids?
What do both like to do?
Do you have a car?
Is more work in DSME or SHI?

We live in Aju-Dong and love it, as close enough to Okpo to walk, but not right in the action for our daughter everyday, and quieter at night.

Hope with these other can help also.

Hi Brenden and Ning

Thank you for your response, much appreciated :)

I will be working at SHI, my wife won't be working and we don't have children. We like to eat out a few nights a week. Gym close by would be good, as would aerobics and yoga classes. We won't have a car. Access to indoor sports would be good - badmington or table tennis. For weekends we like bush walking, beach. Close to SHI would be an advantage but not critical and I have heard it can take up to 1.5 hours to get to SHI from Okpo.

Thanks again

Cheers Darren

For the bars and restaurants Okpo is the better option in my opinion.

For being close to SHI you would want to be in Gohyeon.

As for getting to SHI from Okpo it takes roughly 20 - 25 minutes on average.

Also note that Geoje is the island :)

Hi Chris

Thanks for the input. If traveling to SHI is only 20-30 min on average then thats pretty good. I'm getting the feeling that Okpo is a better proposition. Thanks for clarifying "Goeje" ... bloody newcomers eh! :):)

Cheers Darren

No problem Darren, we were all newcomers at one point.

If you have time when you arrive here just take a look at the two sides and see which one suites you.

Personally I prefer Okpo as there is more to do and everything is pretty much in walking distance.

Suwol which is half way between Okpo and Gohyeon is nice and peaceful and has some great apartments and houses, the downside is there isn't much in the area (It's more for quieter living).

If you have any more questions just post away if not get down to the club when arrive and there will be plenty of people who can give you some info.

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi, I would like to know is there is any gym facility or swimming pool in Okpo or Aju-dong area. I will be coming over to work in the DSME ship yard in January and very much interested in gym facilities.
Thank you all

There is a DSME gym close to DSME shipyard which I used regularly when I was in Okpo. They have gym, swimming pool and steam room. It's cheap and pretty good. Although it is for DSME workers, foreigners are welcomed there.
There is also a gym in Admiral hotel, if you prefer. And another used to be in Tower Palace building ground floor.

Depending on the building you are working in, most of them have a gym somewhere inside.
e.g Harmony centre has 2 (1st floor, second floor), Support centre has 1 (Basement) etc.
They are pretty basic but have everything you need.
