Crime rates in Okpo

Posted: 19 July 2012 - 10:16 AM

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone who is currently living in Okpo can help to shed some light on what the crime rate is like in Okpo?

I'll be moving there at the end of Aug and just wanna know if there are any issues I should be concerned with (i.e. is it safe to walk around at night or when it's dark since it's coming to winter, if there are cases of break-ins etc or even how crime in Okpo is like etc)

Thank you all for your answers in advance! =)

Hey there,

Genuinely, the crime rates in South Korea are pretty low. Even in Seoul, girls can walk back home at night as long as they don't use any dodgy looking dark alleys, which blatently says "don't go there".

My mother lives here and she is Korean, so I would most definitely know if theres any crimes going on.
I would think in Geoje, it is pretty safe. But as always, I would recommend you to be logical. As one says, it's better to be safe than sorry :)

I've heard there are occasional break-ins in houses, I guess this will depend where you are living. If you live in an apartment, you should be pretty safe (plus they have concierge/guard). But if you do live in an individual house then, just like anywhere else in the world.

Anyways, I hope this helps and feel free to ask any other queries!

Thanks Tad!

Your information is really helpful. I think I'll sleep better now knowing that. =)

Do you happen to know how transport in Okpo is like? Is it easy to get round in Okpo through the use of public transport? Is it possible to just walk from place to place?

No problem at all Rina.

I'm glad to hear you can sleep in peace :)

Within Okpo?? yea, it's so walkable, the necessary place anyways.
And the transport to neighbouring cities like Gohyun (more central city with buses to other cities within Korea) and etc.. But generally, wherever you go in Korea, the public transport service is pretty sound with air conditioning to keep you going on your bus jorney too! haha

I hope this helps too, so you can sleep even better haha Peace

Not much crime, but beware that overcharging of foreigners is rampant all over Korea. And some of Koreans are pretty proud that they can shortchange foreigners.

The only crime i have seen or read about in the 6 years I have been here is the occasional too much booze and a fight. I think personally it is one of the safest cities I have ever been to. I have seen a drunk pass out on the table at McDonalds...literally on top of the table and instead of calling the police they set up the wet floor markers around the table to keep everyone away. Very friendly and hospitable and if crime is happening it is very little or very discreet.
